Back To Basics Lesson 3 – Camera Lighting

camera lightingHave you ever seen a you tube video that’s so dark or out of focus that you can’t see what’s going on?  Annoying isn’t it?

Camera lighting can make all of the difference sometimes when making a quality video online.  One surprising thing that most people don’t realize is how inexpensive lights are, and most lights can be picked up at a Local Store for less than $20.

If you’re filming an independent film, or an informal news broadcast, where you’re interviewing someone then having a portable light to take with you can be a real difference maker in the quality of your shot.

I don’t have the luxury of using a lot of camera lighting techniques because most of the time I film weddings, and my approach to wedding videography is to always be present, while being as invisible as possible.

I often lurk in the shadows (not in a creepy way) to get the shot of the bride and groom kissing, and for their first dance, and for all the key moments of a wedding that makes that day special.

By introducing camera lighting that’s artificial, it takes away from that bride and groom’s special moment, and it deteriorates from their special day.

That being said, filming speeches, corporate events, and trade shows have all benefited from a bit of strategic camera lighting placed at my feet, as I’m filming that particular special event or situation.  camera lighting

One popular and portable light to consider is the NEEWER 160 LED Dimmable Light solution, which is currently one of the top lighting solutions for digital camcorders on Amazon.

By utilizing an LED based lighting system, the mounted light is very light (as in low weight), portable (it mounts right to most camcorders and digital SLR’s) and it’s inexpensive.  The current selling price for this lighting system is about $45.

No matter which camcorder or digital SLR that you use, consider investing in a light to brighten up your shots, and bring a whole new warmth and excitement to your video shot.  Happy Filming everyone!
